The discipline of Hydropower Engineering Construction and Agricultural Water and Soil Engineering in Hohai University is developed on the basis of the original discipline of Water Conservancy and Irrigation. As a traditional discipline of Hohai University, it has formed comparatively strong advantages after fifty years of construction and has made great contributions to the national economic construction and personnel training.

The discipline centers on the needs of planning, management and protection of water and land resources in the countryside of our country, perfectly combines the agriculture, water conservancy and the environment, and emphatically studies the relationship among water, soil and crops in the agricultural production. The pattern of water, soil and solute transport in agricultural environment and its control and management technology and engineering have a higher academic level in research directions of water-saving irrigation and farmland drainage, comprehensive utilization of agricultural water and soil resources, modernization of pumping station projects and irrigated areas, as well as the protection of agricultural water and soil environment.

It has advanced instruments and equipment at home and abroad, such as automatic drainage demonstration system, time domain reflectometer, AP Porometer, portable photosynthesis measuring system, fixed lysimeter with corridor and rain shed, automatic measuring system of variable slope soil grooves and so on.The water-saving park of Hohai University of the Ministry of Water Resources covers an area of about 30hm2. It integrates water-saving in cities, daily life, and agriculture, as well as environmental protection and management. It has four functions: research and development, teaching and training, application and popularization, presentation and demonstration. The discipline has a group of well-known experts who have great influence at home and abroad, forming a scientific research group with young scientific and technological workers as the main body. Team members of the discipline study water conservancy, soil, agriculture, resources and environment, and other fields. Intersected multi-disciplines and rich vitality laid a solid foundation for the entire group of people to solve China's major scientific research issues.

Master's programs of the discipline were approved in 2000; In 2003, doctorate programs were approved. In recent years, the discipline of Hydropower Engineering Construction and Agricultural Water and Soil Engineering has cultivated nearly 100 postgraduate students for China, as well as a large number of international undergraduates and postgraduates for many developing countries in Asia and Africa, and has made great contributions to the construction of water conservancy and hydropower in China, especially in rural areas.

The discipline has undertaken more than 100 major national projects, such as the National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), the National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Technologies R&D Program of China, key scientific and technological projects at provincial or ministerial levels, as well as projects concerning the production, etc. Its major research achievements have reached at the international advanced level.
